Why do we age; do all species age, or can some lucky ones escape aging? And what is the decisive factor that determines whether or not aging evolves as part of a species' life cycle? Classic theory predicts that aging should be a universal phenomenon. Yet, some species, like the desert tortoise or the fresh water polyp hydra challenge this view. The researchers of the Max Planck Research Group "Modeling the Evolution of Aging" develop new concepts, measures and models to study aging across the diversity of species both theoretically and empirically, contributing to understanding the evolution of aging.Detailed description
