Recent Trends and Future Uncertainties in Longevity. 5th Human Mortality Database Symposium

Call for Papers

The Human Mortality Database Project team invites contributions to the 5^th HMD Symposium. The Symposium is devoted to demographic, epidemiologic, and public health research on mortality, longevity, and health across national and sub-national populations. The purpose of the Symposium is to present and promote research on mortality and survival. Analyses based on data from the Human Mortality Database (HMD) and the Human Life table Database (HLD) are particularly encouraged. The Symposium aims at addressing major themes and challenges of substantive research as well as methodological and data issues. In addition to contributing to the scientific program, participants are invited to provide feedback and suggestions on the currently available contents and on the methods used as well as to propose future developments for the Human Mortality Database Project.

Paper proposals

Empirical and methodological papers are equally welcome. Possible topics include, but are not limited to, the following research areas:

• Methods  of population-level mortality analyses
• Overcoming data challenges: quality assessment and methods
• Frontiers of longevity. Survival and health at advanced ages
• Recent unfavorable changes in mortality in high-income countries. Explanations and challenges ahead

• Causes of death and determinants of  mortality
• Convergence  and divergence in the length of life over the globe
• Longevity and health differences within national populations
• Estimating mortality in China and India: challenges and solutions

If you are interested in contributing to the 5^th HMD Symposium, please send a 300+ word abstract or draft paper to the HMD (hmd@mortality.org) with Cc: to Dmitri Jdanov (Jdanov@demogr.mpg.de) by 17^th  February 2019. Please make sure to include: the provisional title of your proposal, the full name(s) of each author, their affiliation (full name of organization and department), and their e-mail address(es). Applicants will be notified by 1^st March 2019 if their paper has been accepted.

Place and date of the event

The Symposium is scheduled to take place on 13-14 May 2019 at the Harnack Haus in Berlin (http://www.harnackhaus-berlin.mpg.de/2316/en).

There are no participation fees, but participants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation expenses.

About the HMD Project

The Human Mortality Database is a joint project of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) and the Department of Demography of the University of California at Berkeley (UCB) with a contribution by the French National Institute of Demographic Studies (INED). The project aims to provide free and user-friendly access to a variety of data on survival and longevity (for more details see Barbieri et al. 2015). The core Project consists of two companion databases: the Human Mortality Database (http://www.mortality.org) and the Human Life table Database (http://www.lifetable.de).

Previous HMD Symposiums have been held at MPIDR in Rostock in 2004 and 2008, at INED in Paris in 2010, and in Berlin in 2017. Some information about these past events is available at https://www.mortality.org/Public/Events.php.
