Kannisto-Thatcher Database on Old-Age Mortality

James W. Vaupel, Vladimir M. Shkolnikov, Dmitri A. Jdanov

Detailed description:

The central goal of the Kannisto-Thatcher Database (KTD) is to provide high-quality and comparable international data on mortality at ages 80 and older. Data quality assessment and the classification of countries and historical periods according to data quality are the main work areas in this project. The battery of data quality tests proposed by Kannisto and other researchers has been used to accomplish these tasks.

The database is equipped with an online toolkit for the aggregation and analysis of the data. It allows users to calculate a range of mortality and population indicators online. The selection of indicators, countries, time periods, and the visual presentation of results can be done in a user-friendly way. All data from the KTD are freely available online.

The core set of data was assembled, tested for quality, and converted into mortality schedules by Väinö Kannisto, a former United Nations advisor on demographic and social statistics.

Comparable materials on England and Wales were made available by Roger Thatcher, the former Director of the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys and the former Registrar-General of England and Wales. With research funding provided by the U.S. National Institute on Aging and the Danish Research Councils, the KTD was computerized under the supervision of James W. Vaupel at the Aging Research Unit of the Centre for Health and Social Policy at Odense University Medical School in 1993.

Currently, all countries included in the KTD are also covered by the Human Mortality Database (www.mortality.org). Nevertheless, we are still maintaining the KTD to provide alternative non-smoothed estimates for old-age mortality based on same input data.

The project also allows us to monitor the trends in old-age mortality using a system of advanced old-age mortality indicators developed by Väinö Kannisto.
