James W. Vaupel is founding director of the MPIDR and was head of the Laboratories of Survival and Longevity and of Evolutionary Biodemography until 2017. The researchers in the Laboratory of Survival and Longevity investigated the causes and patterns of age-specific improvements in mortality and health and the implications of ongoing life expectancy increases for individuals, families, and society. The researchers in the Laboratory of Evolutionary Biodemography investigated the parameters that define the mortality and fertility of individual animal species, assuming that evolution shapes the demographic setup of an organism, which, in turn, shapes evolution.

Both Laboratories were dissolved with the departure of James W. Vaupel. Research projects not yet completed will be concluded in the Emeritus Research Group.
