Pre-Conference EPC Workshop

EAPS Working Group on Open Science in Demography

Bologna, Italy, June 03, 2026

Open science consists of a set of principles and practices that aim “to make multilingual scientific knowledge [...] accessible and reusable for everyone [...] for the benefits of science and society” (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization 2021). While some fields have embraced this movement, demography has been slower to adopt open science practices. Barriers, both real and perceived, have limited the integration of open science into demographic research practices.

Our mission

The EAPS Open Science Working Group aims to change this by fostering a culture where open science becomes the norm rather than the exception in demography. We seek to raise awareness of best practices in open science and provide support for demographers looking to implement them in their work. Through a combination of networking, training, and resource-sharing, we aim to make open science more accessible and practical for the demographic research community.

Our first in-person meeting

Our first meeting will take place as a pre-conference event at the upcoming European Population Conference in Bologna. The meeting will be divided into two parts. In the first part, we will meet each other for the first time, introduce the group and our objectives, and discuss future activities that will be beneficial for the network. In the second part of the meeting,  Jonas Schöley [web-page] and Aliakbar Akbaritabar [web-page] will give a two-hour workshop on “Open Science Practices for Demographic Research”. Registration is open to anyone on a first come, first served basis by sending us an email at eaps.opensci@gmail.com (the room capacity is limited to 50 participants).

We are looking for new members to help shape and grow the network! If you are passionate about open science and want to contribute to making demographic research more transparent and accessible, we invite you to get involved. Whether you are an early-career researcher, an established scholar, or a research support technician, your participation can help foster a stronger open science community within demography. Please reach out to eaps.opensci@gmail.com to join the group, get informed, and participate in group activities. For additional information about our group and our goals, please check our EAPS website.
