The new issue (No. 2/2019) of Demografische Forschung Aus Erster Hand, the popular science newsletter with latest research results from demography, has been released.

The Newsletter is available in German only.

"Demografische Forschung Aus Erster Hand" is a joint publication of the Max Planck Institute for demographic Research (MPIDR), the Rostocker Zentrum zur Erforschung des Demografischen Wandels (RZ), the Vienna Institute of Demography (VID), the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital and the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB).

The topics of the new issue are:

Life expectancy: Brains matter more than the wallet
Life expectancy rises with income, but this is only part of the story
At latest since the publication of an often-cited study in 1975, it has been claimed time and again that economic climb produces life-expectancy growth. But analyses of recent years paint a more nuanced picture: Education is the driving force behind lifetime gains. A study by the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital in Vienna confirms this finding with new figures.

The drug crisis and its children
Generation of baby boomers especially hit by the opioid crisis in the USA

Average life expectancy is rising in almost all developed countries. But in the USA it has declined markedly, this being the first time ever since WW I. From 2014 to 2016, it fell by three months among men and about one and a half months among women. The main reason is that drug-related deaths are increasing, as new analyses show.

A sensitive gender?
Study examines whether men and women rate their health differently

A common cliché has it that men are tough guys but whine about small aches and pains. Then again, statisticians also see that women often assess their health more poorly and consult a doctor more often than do men. So, which sex is more vulnerable? A new study has looked at this question.

The newsletter is released four times a year and is available electronically and as a printed version and is free of charge.

All past issues are available online on the Newsletter website. On the website you also have the possibility to subscribe to the Newsletter to get informed about the release of the new issues or to receive the printed versions by mail.
