The new issue (Nr. 2/2015) of "Demografische Forschung Aus Erster Hand", the popular science newsletter with latest research results from demography, has been released. (The Newsletter is available in German only.)

Topics of the 2/2015 issue:

1. The world on the move
Migration waves have generally been stable since 1995

In a globalized world, it is easy to conclude that more and more people are migrating to other countries. However, this common assumption cannot be confirmed, as there are no exact numbers on global migration movements. But Nikola Sander and Guy Abel of the Vienna Institute of Demography have succeeded in producing estimates and visualizations of migration movements across a total of 196 countries.

2. Having children later makes parents happy
A study shows that delaying family formation is associated with higher satisfaction levels.

Children can be a source of delight, and then in the next moment leave their parents feeling completely exasperated. Thus, the answers to the question of whether having children leads to happiness have varied. A new study shows that the satisfaction levels of parents depend not only on the number of children they have, but also on the point in time when they start a family.

3. Can health care reform improve longevity?
The connection between higher health care expenditures and the reduction in mortality in the Netherlands.

While in most industrialized countries mortality fell sharply in the 1980s and 1990s, in the Netherlands it stagnated during this period. It was not until 2002 that the average life expectancy started to increase rapidly in the Netherlands as well. Shortly before this improvement began, the Dutch health care system underwent a comprehensive reform. Is this just a coincidence?

"Demografische Forschung Aus Erster Hand" is a joint publication of the Max Planck Institute for demographic Research (MPIDR), the Rostocker Zentrum zur Erforschung des Demografischen Wandels (RZ), the Vienna Institute of Demography (VID), the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital and the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB). The newsletter is released four times a year and is available electronically and as a printed version and is free of charge.

All past issues are available online on the Newsletter website. On the website you also have the possibility to subscribe to the Newsletter to get informed about the release of the new issues or to receive the printed versions by mail.
