Pavel Grigoriev receives a 1.42 million Euro grant from the European Research Council to conduct the project “Regional disparities in cause-specific mortality in Europe: the role of local context and national health policies” (REDIM).

How does the process of the general mortality decline diffuse across space, and what causes of death contribute most to this diffusion? To what extent do national borders determine health borders? Pavel Grigoriev, researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPDIR), with funding from the European Research Council, will lead a team of researchers tackling these research questions.

REDIM is the first large-scale systematic investigation of persistent and emerging spatial disparities in cause-specific mortality across 20 European countries. Collecting and harmonizing a large amount of cause-specific mortality data is crucial for the successful implementation of the project. Harmonized mortality indicators will then be interpreted in conjunction with contextual variables capturing the effects of local context and national health policies. The scientific output of the project is highly relevant to the context of the integration process within the European Union, which strives to enhance coordination of policies promoting more equal access to all benefits and assets in society, including health.

To implement this research project Pavel Grigoriev received a European Research Council Starting Grant of 1.42 million Euro, providing funding for 5 years. The Starting Grants are awarded annually by the European Research Council to researchers at European research institutions who wish to lead their own research groups. They are awarded 621 million Euro, with grants being worth up to 2.5 Million Euro each.
