The Max Planck Partner Group "Family Demography in Sub-Saharan Africa" focuses on understanding how highly educated young adults in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Malawi, are reshaping family and fertility patterns amid rapid social change. Their flagship project, MUGIP (Malawi University Graduate Internet Panel), is the first large-scale study tracking fertility desires and behaviors among university graduates in Malawi.
By examining these issues through a comparative lens, the group aims to advance demographic theory about fertility transitions and inform policy discussions about family change in Sub-Saharan Africa, filling a critical gap in demographic research that has largely overlooked this influential population group.
