Project

Health Outcomes of Automation Risk in Germany (Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowship)

Conducted by Christian Dudel; Mariia Vasiakina

Detailed Description

Automation and artificial intelligence are reshaping how work is conducted. While this change comes with many opportunities, it also has considerable downsides. For instance, there is strong evidence that recent technological change is associated with labor turnover, occupational shifts, and demotion. Thus, technological change in the labor market enhances uncertainty and affect workers’ perceptions of job insecurity. This, in turn, may have an impact on their health outcomes and overall well-being. Existing studies on this potential link between technological change and health often only use cross-sectional data and have other methodological shortcomings. In this project, we extend the existing literature by leveraging high-quality longitudinal data from Germany and Russia and applying advanced empirical methods to examine the impact of workplace exposure to automation risk on workers’ health outcomes. Moreover, we are among the first to dig deeper into the underlying mechanisms mediating this impact, including health behaviors such as alcohol consumption.
