Advances in computational power and statistical algorithms, in conjunction with the increasing availability of large datasets, have led to a Cambrian explosion of machine learning (ML) methods. For population researchers, these methods are useful not only for predicting population dynamics but also as tools to improve causal inference tasks. However, the rapid evolution of this literature, coupled with terminological disparities from conventional approaches, renders these methods enigmatic and arduous for many population researchers to grasp. more

The Laboratory of Fertility and Well-Being welcomes Alessandro Di Nallo as a new team member. Alessandro comes from Bocconi University in Milan, where he contributed to the ERC-funded project 'DisCont' and the Cariplo-funded project 'FAST'. He holds a Ph.D. in Political and Social Sciences, with a specialization in Sociodemography, from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain. His thesis, entitled "The Diversity of Union and Fertility Trajectories in the UK", explored complex patterns of family formation and childbearing. more

The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) has researched parents' support behavior in relation to school grades. The study shows that low-income families support their children equally regardless of grades, while parents from higher income groups tend to give more support to children with lower grades. It also raises the question of whether these patterns contribute to low social mobility, as parents of high-achieving children from lower social classes do not have the same resources and strategies at their disposal as parents of low-achieving children from higher social classes. more
