Preface

A large project such as this cannot be completed without the help of many people. We are grateful to UC Davis undergraduate students Karen Abalos, Harold Amogan, Sophie Betts, Alician Cook, Kim Day, Hoa Giang, Erin Kamei, Sandra Lara, Sarah Mertz, Sakura Nakahara, Phuoc Nguyen, Janel Rodas, Jennifer Schmidt, Nancy Toy, Duc Vo, and Elmer Yee for their help in library research, to Mei Huang for her technical assistance, to Kathy Gruenfelder for supervising student assistants and for initially organizing the data bases, and to Justin Adams for his editorial assistance. Dr. Steven Austad and Dr. Daniel Promislow kindly provided access to their databases. We thank James W. Vaupel for encouraging us to publish the longevity database, Odense University Press for their willingness to allow us to make the data available on the worldwide web, and to Bernard Jeune and Kirsten M. Gauthier for their editorial assistance in getting the book published. This work was supported in part by a Duke University Pilot Project Program grant from the Center for Demographic Studies and by grants from the National Institute on Aging (Grants AG08761-01 and AG14228). Editing and printing were financed by a Danish Research Councils grant (#9502133) to the Aging Research Center, University of Southern Denmark, Odense University.
