Guests

The MPIDR regularly receives guests from around the world who attend workshops and conferences. It is also not uncommon, that some guests spend longer periods at the Institute to do research with scientists at the MPDIR as Guest Researchers. Should you be interested in spending some time at the Institute, you may apply for participation in the guest program.

If your stay is already confirmed, you may contact the MPIDR’s Assistance for Visiting Scholars. It will help you with organizing your stay. The Institute also has a couple of guest apartments and guest rooms available for guests.

Guest Program

The MPIDR offers scientists from Germany and abroad the opportunity to spend some time working at the Institute as a guest. You can use the Institute’s excellent infrastructure and exchange information with international colleagues on site.

As a participant of our Guest Program, you have a workstation at the Institute and receive support in all aspects of daily and scientific life. You are also welcome to take an active part in the academic and social life of the Institute.

If you are working on a research project that fits the Institute’s portfolio and you are interested in our Guest Program, please do not hesitate to apply. Below you find further information on the admission procedure.

Funding opportunities for the Guest Program

Should you not have external funding, there may be the possibility to receive a grant from the Max Planck Society. The maximum grant duration is two years for postdoctoral scientists from abroad and six months for doctoral students. Please note that German scientists with a PhD are excluded from grant eligibility pursuant to the MPG Support Guidelines for Junior Scientists.

Application procedure

You can apply at any time for a place in the Guest Program. Unfortunately, we can provide only a limited number of places for reasons of capacity. Your application will be decided on by a scientific committee.

Please email your application (in English) as one pdf (subject: Guest Program application) to the secretary of the respective research group you want to be attached to. Please enclose the following documents:

  • a letter of interest
  • a Curriculum Vitae
  • a description of the research (current or planned) you want to conduct at our Institute, including a short statement as to why the MPIDR-research group you have chosen would fit your research
  • a short note on whether you have external funding or would like to apply for a grant by the MPG

Should you have further questions about the Guest Program, please do not hesitate to contact the secretary of the Chief Research Coordinator (reymann@demogr.mpg.de).

Further offers of the MPIDR

Please note that in addition to the Guest Program mentioned above, the MPIDR has a number of other offers for doctoral students and scientists with a PhD. These include the European Doctoral School of Demography (EDSD), International Advanced Studies in Demography (IDEM), i.e., a training program for doctoral students and postdocs, and the International Max Planck Research School for Population, Health and Data Science (IMPRS-PHDS), a three-year doctoral program that merges demography, epidemiology and data science.
