Workshop

Demystifying Machine Learning for Population Researchers

Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR), Rostock, Germany, November 05–06, 2024

The workshop Demystifying machine learning for population researchers aims to clarify the goals, techniques, and applications of machine learning methods for population research. The main focus of this workshop is on ML techniques using quantitative population data and research questions, not on ML language models. In particular, the workshop will include an introduction to ML methods for population researches, with a particular focus on answering causal questions. The contributing sessions will showcase current developments of ML methods for population health, fertility and family dynamics, and will foster critical discussions about the shortfalls of these techniques.

Keynote speakers:

  • Prof. Jennie E. Brand, Cornell University (online talk)
  • Prof. Ian Lundberg, University of California
