HYBRID EVENT

Ethnic Discrimination: Field Experiments in Search of Clues

Guest: Didier Ruedin (University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland)
Department of Digital and Computational Demography, February 07, 2024

Hybrid Seminar Talk, February 7th from 11am to 12pm (CET)

Didier Ruedin from the University of Neuchâtel will talk about ethnic discrimination: field experiments in search of clues.

Abstract

Ethnic discrimination can have important implications for the well-being of immigrants, their intentions to return, and broader disparities in society. Drawing on two field experiments in the Swiss housing market, I show that, contrary to popular fears, Covid-19 did not increase discrimination against the main non-Western immigrant groups in Switzerland (immigrants from Turkey and Kosovo). We also explore the surprising impact of a sporting event on discrimination, and look for clues in online communication (Twitter), newspapers, and postal services. The combination of different data sources helps us to understand the underlying mechanisms, and thus encourages us to think about how to reduce levels of discrimination.
