11:00 AM: Talk with Pedro Menezes de Araujo - Clustering all-cause country-level mortality data
Room 400 and Zoom
Abstract
The analysis of mortality data has been an active research area over the past few decades. While topics like forecasting have received significant attention, clustering methods have also seen increased use. This talk synthesizes recent applications of clustering analysis to country-level, all-cause mortality data by addressing some key questions: What type of mortality data has been clustered? Why cluster mortality data? Which clustering methods have been employed? What are some of the main findings? Additionally, methods inspired by previous work are applied to a standard mortality dataset. The review indicates that most studies focus on developed countries, frequently utilizing data from the Human Mortality Database. Clustering techniques are generally used to enhance forecasting accuracy or to investigate patterns of inequality and convergence, employing a variety of methods such as k-means, hierarchical approaches, and functional clustering. Despite substantial progress, further research opportunities remain, particularly in applying new clustering methods, developing approaches tailored to mortality data, assessing clustering quality, and incorporating more diverse datasets.
