11:00 AM: Talk with Abigail Tun Mendicuti - The Enduring Influence of Family Networks on Migration: A Study of Male Heads of Households from Mexico
Room 400
Abstract
Family networks are known to drive migration decision-making. This research aims to study how the influence of family networks on migration varies over time and whether there are differences in who (father, mother, brother, sister) migrated before in the migration from Mexico to the United States among male heads of households. We utilize data from the Mexican Migration Project (MMP) and employ discrete-time event history analysis of the timing of the first migration to the United States. The independent variables include several interactions between the migration of family members and time, measured across three periods of migration. Results show that father and brother networks remain relevant in all periods, while mother and sister networks are important during a period with more restrictions on migration.
