11:00 AM: Talk with Bruno Arpino - Kinship networks, family relationships and Older People's Well-Being
Auditorium - room 057
Abstract
Demographic shifts—such as population aging, declining fertility, increased migration, and changing partnership patterns—are reshaping family structures and intergenerational ties. These transformations are producing new dynamics for older adults, including evolving roles within families and a growing prevalence of kinlessness.
This seminar will explore the complex relationship between family ties and older adults’ well-being, drawing on empirical studies of changing family structures and relationships. Particular attention will be given to grandparental childcare as a form of intergenerational exchange, highlighting both its potential benefits and its challenges for older adults’ health and well-being. I will also examine the broader evolution of kinship networks—focusing on their size, composition, and variation across and within countries—and consider the implications of limited or absent kin for support in later life.
