As part of the Suessmilch Lecture series, Steffen Mau from the Humboldt University of Berlin will speak about "Lütten Klein and the East German Transformations".

The event begins at 3 pm CET on February 27, 2024.

Abstract

The lecture takes a broad view on the transformations of the East German society from 1970 till today. It looks at the co-development of the social structure of society (social mobility, inequality, demography, migration), on the one hand, and the mentalities and cultural practices, on the other hand. It attempts to paint a concise picture of the working class society of the GDR and the social deficits of the late GDR as well as the structural problems arising from unification. It also tries to unravel reasons for today’s dissatisfaction and skepticism of fractions of society with regard to democratic institutions and political representatives. Background of the talk is the book: Steffen Mau (2019): Lütten Klein. Leben in der ostdeutschen Transformationsgesellschaft. Berlin: Suhrkamp.
