Call for Papers

We invite submissions from researchers, advanced PhD students, and technical specialists from National Statistics Offices or International Organizations working on, or interested in, measuring migration in Latin America. This two-day symposium aims to promote lively exchange and collaboration among interdisciplinary scientists (from data science, demography, sociology, geography, migration studies, and more) with an interest in measuring and understanding migration processes using or combining emerging and established data sources. We especially welcome submissions that combine a broad set of data (digital and traditional) and methods, with a geographic focus on Latin America and other regions of the Global South.

Some relevant topics include, but are not limited to, the following ones:

  • Estimation, nowcasting, and forecasting of migrant stocks and migration flows
  • Assessment of biases in web and social media and other digital trace data to examine migration
  • Sociodemographic characteristics of international and internal migrants
  • Social inclusion, assimilation, and integration of international migrants
  • Web and social media platforms as recruitment and sampling tools in migrant surveys
  • Experiments regarding the decision-making process in the context of international and internal migration
  • Attitudes towards immigration
  • Digital ethnographies of people on the move
  • Analyses of high-skilled and scholarly migration

Submissions could be in English, Spanish, or Portuguese, including a short abstract (250 words) and a full paper or extended abstract (2-4 pages). The preferred language for oral presentations is English, but depending on the number of submissions in other languages we would strive for appropriate arrangements. To receive full consideration, submissions should be received by November 15, 2024 (23:59 am, CET). Notifications of the outcome will be sent out by the end of November 2024. There are no fees to attend, but participants are expected to cover their travel costs and accommodations. Limited financial support may be available for presenting students or early career scientists with high-quality submissions and no funding available.

This symposium will also serve as an opportunity to celebrate the completion of a five-year collaboration between the Department of Digital and Computational Demography of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research and the Programa de Población of the Universidad de la República, as well as the launch of the R+D Group on Human Mobility and Digital Demography of the Universidad de la República.
