11:00 AM: Thiago Zordan Malaguth - Age, Gender and Regional Differences in the Migration of Scholars
Abstract: Limitations in data availability inhibit the study of scholars' migration. Previous studies have addressed this limitation by re-purposing bibliometric data to estimate the migration based on changes in scholars' affiliation addresses. However crucial variables such as the biological age of scholars are still lacking in these studies. The proxy used, i.e., academic age, based on the first year of publication, makes strong assumptions and, in some cases, could be prone to errors. This gap is important because the age of scholars plays a critical role in their selection of research topics, collaboration style, migration decisions, career trajectories, and contributions to academia. In this talk, I will present some results of gender and regional differences in internal and international migration of scholars, and how I intend to include academic and biological age in the analysis.
Bio: Thiago Zordan Malaguth is a PhD student at the Department of Digital and Computational Demography at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR). His research interests include demographic methods and their application to new sources of digital trace data. His doctoral research is focused on the age profile of high-skilled migrants. Prior to pursuing his doctoral studies, he held two roles outside of academia: as a public policy specialist in the Minas Gerais state government, and as a consultant for the Ministry of Education in Brazil. He holds a Master's degree in Demography from the Federal University of Minas Gerais. Following the completion of his Master's degree, he attended the European Doctoral School of Demography (EDSD).
