10th Birthday of the Human Mortality Database

The Human Mortality Database (HMD) is a collection of detailed population and mortality data, created to support research in longevity. It has celebrated its 10th anniversary in May 2012.

Over the past decade, the HMD has become a very popular data source for use in demographic analysis. The success of the database is demonstrated by the increasing number of users, among other things: More than 20,000 users worldwide have registered on the HMD website to get access to the database.

The HMD was created to provide detailed mortality and population data, which are indispensable for the study of human longevity. Currently, data are available for 37 countries.

The database is a joint project of the Department of Demography at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), USA and the MPIDR.
