Demography of Family

Sociologist Gøsta Esping-Andersen from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona will give a lecture at the MPIDR titled “Re-theorizing family demography”.

Vita

Gøsta Esping-Andersen is professor of Sociology at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain, where he heads the Sociology Unit of the Department of Political and Social Sciences.

Born in Denmark, he studied demography, economics, and sociology at Copenhagen University and at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he received his PhD.  Before coming to Pompeu Fabra, he taught at Harvard University, the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung, the University of Trento, and the European University in Florence.

His current research focuses on two themes: first, inter-generational mobility patterns across different advanced countries; second, changes in family behavior in terms of couple specialization as well as life-course decisions regarding marriage, divorce, and fertility.

Gøsta Esping-Andersen is author of many books (e.g. “The Three Worlds of Welfare Capitalism” (1990), “The Social Foundations of Postindustrial Economies” (1999), “Why We Need a Welfare State” (2002)) and articles widely perceived both by politicians and the media.

He is a member of the Scientific Council of the Juan March Institute (Madrid), the ÉcoleNormale Supérieure (Paris), and the Danish Institute for Social Research. He also serves on the editorial board of many scientific journals, and he worked extensively for international organizations (United Nations, World Bank, OECD) as well as national governments.
