IUSSP Early Career Award 2025 Europe for Diego Alburez-Gutierrez
MPIDR research group leader Diego Alburez-Gutierrez receives the IUSSP Early Career Award 2025 Europe. The IUSSP Early Career Awards were established by the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) in 2023 for each of the world regions. The award recognizes and honors outstanding contributions to the development of our discipline and the wider field of population studies by early career researchers in the different regions of the world, and promotes the global visibility of their achievements. The awards will be presented online on May 15, 2025.

“Diego’s research utilizes insights from demography to study kinship processes globally. He has also used his skills for the benefit of the demographic community. For example, he contributed to the development and dissemination of two R-language packages, ‘DemoKin’ and ‘rsocsim,’ facilitating the implementation of demographic models and simulations to study kinship dynamics. As an advocate of Open Science, Diego consistently shares the data and code from his publications on openly-accessible platforms. Moreover, he actively engages in science communication through social media, newspaper interviews, academic videos, podcast appearances, and blogposts. It is wonderful to see that the IUSSP Early Career Award recognized Diego’s efforts. We hope that it will be not only an additional reason of encouragement for Diego, but also a source of inspiration for younger scholars to follow a path of scientific excellence, service to the community, and commitment to science and science outreach”, explains Emilio Zagheni, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR).
Diego Alburez-Gutierrez heads the Research Group Kinship Inequalities at the MPIDR.

Jointly these associations make up the Awards Jury. The Awards, one per world region so five in total, are bestowed every other year.
