Population History Seminar

We are pleased to announce the opening of the Population History Seminar. The intention of the seminar is to gather representatives of different strands of historical-demographic research in order to discuss, expand and revaluate various aspects of demographic behavior of the past populations. Apart from some technical issues we find relevant (like the important topic of relational and longitudinal database for historical-demographic research), the presentation of local case studies, and the re-evaluation of ways in which research in population history has been conducted so far, we aspire to touch upon the most crucial elements of the existing body of theories regarding household formation, reproduction and mortality in the past. We would also like to make these meetings interdisciplinary in character, by bringing together communities of historical demographers, demographers, economists, and anthropologists.

We will announce each seminar session in advance. Please find enclosed an overview of the program. The first seminar will take place next Wednesday (2 p.m., Room 005). Kees Mandemakers, Senior researcher International Institute of Social History, Amsterdam and the professor of Large Historical Databases at the Faculty of History and Arts of the Erasmus University Rotterdam will give a talk "Structuring and Standardizing Longitudinal Historical Data".
