The administration of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) welcomed René Langenhan as an in-house technician/driver this summer. René has already worked as a technician and driver in a number of large commercial and public companies in northern Germany, Rostock and the region.
What are your tasks at MPIDR?
My role includes various activities as an in-house technician and driver. As an in-house technician, I am responsible for many repairs and tasks around the building. This includes repairing office equipment, as well as gardening, maintaining and developing the biodiversity of the Institute's green spaces, and any other work that may be assigned to me. I'm also the driver for the institute's directors, making sure they get to their destinations safely and on time.
Why did you choose MPIDR as your new employer?
I chose the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) as my new employer because several aspects appealed to me. I appreciate the proximity to research, which allows me to work in a scientific environment. The affiliation with the renowned Max Planck Society was another decisive factor. I was also impressed by the beautiful institute building and the nice and friendly people I now have the opportunity to work with.
What motivated you to work in this field?
My motivation to work in this field is my passion for craftsmanship. I am a craftsman at heart and I enjoy practical and varied tasks. I enjoy repairing and maintaining things and making sure everything runs smoothly. This enthusiasm for craftsmanship drives me and makes my work fulfilling and satisfying.
Where are you from? What do you miss most about your home country?
I am from Thuringia - the beautiful mountains. What I miss most about my homeland are these mountains and the impressive nature. There is something very calming and unique about the landscape there.
What do you like most and least about your job?
What I like most about my job is the freedom I have to manage my time, which allows me to be flexible with my day. I especially like the fact that I get to help people every day. Whether it's through small repairs or larger projects, it feels good to make a positive difference in people's daily lives. I also really enjoy repairing things because I like being hands-on and solving problems.
What is my least favorite thing? So far there isn't really anything I don't like. I hope it stays that way 😁.
