The Laboratory of Migration and Mobility is pleased to welcome Thiago Zordan Malaguth as a new doctoral student. Thiago holds a Master's degree in Demography from the University of Minas Gerais. His thesis was on "Migration and School Flow of the 2008-2019 Cohort of Students in Minas Gerais". After completing his Master's degree, he attended the European Doctoral School of Demography. He is interested in demographic methods and their application to new sources of digital trace data. During his time at MPIDR, he will focus on highly skilled migration, among other topics.
What motivates you to work in this area of research?
I worked as a policy specialist in the government of the state of Minas Gerais. I had the opportunity to follow the policy evaluation analysis carried out by Cedeplar/UFMG for the Secretariat of Education, where I understood the importance of academic research for evidence-based public policies. This experience strengthened my interest in science, especially in demography.
Why did you choose MPIDR as your new employer?
Since I started my Master's in Demography, I've been interested in demographic methods and the use of different types of data to estimate demographic measures. Because of the topics and the quality of the research done in the Department of Digital and Computational Demography, it seemed like the perfect place for me to learn and work.
Where are you from? What do you miss most about home (and maybe: what don't you miss at all)?
I'm from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. I miss my family and friends the most, but I also miss the food and the weather. I guess the only thing I don't miss about my city in Brazil is the traffic.
What is your favourite and least favourite part of the job?
My favourite part is learning. I like to discuss and learn from others and apply it to my own work. I don't have a least favourite part yet and I hope to keep it that way.
