On October 26, 2018 Marcus Ebeling from the Research Group "Mathematical and Actuarial Demography" successfully defended his doctoral with summa cum laude thesis on "Measuring mortality trends and dynamics in an era of continuous mortality decline" at the University of Rostock.

His cumulative dissertation provides, among other things, novel insights into the forces that affect the lifetime risk of getting a disease, the rectangularization of the survival curve, and proposes a new tool to evaluate mortality forecasts.

Results of his dissertation have been published in Population Studies, PLoSONE, twice in Demography as well as in other peer-reviewed journals.

The dissertation was supervised by Roland Rau (University of Rostock, MPIDR) and Karin Modig (Karolinska Institute, Sweden).
