Project

Unpaid Work Throughout the Life Course

Conducted by Mikko Myrskylä; Emma Zai, Peter Eibich; in Collaboration with Yinan Liu (Renmin University of China, Beijing, China)

Detailed Description

Throughout the life course, individuals often provide unpaid care work, such as raising children or grandchildren and taking care of older parents or grandparents. Unpaid work also involves volunteering, such as for local communities or nongovernment organizations. In this project, we study how unpaid work distributes across the life course and how it impacts the health and well-being of individuals. We also identify how policies encourage or discourage certain types of unpaid work. To do so, we employ longitudinal survey and register data as well as panel regression techniques. To study the impact of policies, we exploit policy changes that provide quasi-experimental variation.
