The age is female: demography of the female population
Der Gynäkologe, 39:5, 346–353 (2006)

Women live longer than men in all industrialized countries and, therefore, constitute the majority of the elderly population. The causes of this are partly rooted in the history of the last century and in social and biological factors. Low fertility and increasing life expectancy lead to population ageing with a substantial increase of the old and very old. The elderly of tomorrow, however, will be healthier, more often married, more highly educated, will have more children and will be less likely to be childless. Generally, the number of people in need of care will increase; however, population groups with a high risk of institutional care will grow the least.
