Before Christian Bader started his job at the MPIDR in February, he had already worked for a 5-star hotel and a medical technology company. In this interview, he talks about things equally important to both employers, what he is looking forward to in his new job, and what everyone really should do at least once in Rostock.

You had already worked in a luxury hotel and for a medical technology company as a house technician, and as a maintenance technician. What was equally important at both employers and what was different?

Smooth operations were top priority at both employers. In a nutshell, the hotel and production facilities had to be running well! In a 5-star-plus hotel, the guest is number one. It's all about giving the guest a perfect vacation. In medical technology, the medical product is most important: In the high-end area, human lives are also at stake in the end if quality, documentation, or production is wrong.

As you started work at the MPIDR, what are you particularly looking forward to?

I am particularly looking forward to having a wide and very interesting range of tasks. I can nicely bring in my knowledge and experience and also learn a lot.

You are a Rostock native. If you could name just one thing that everyone should do here, what would it be?

Well, strictly speaking, I'm from Satow, but I'd let that pass. My suggestion? Come to enjoy the sunset with friends on the beach at Warnemünde. Cool drinks, music or maybe even a barbecue make the evening even nicer. Only in the summer, of course.

What are you most enthusiastic about in your free time?

I like to be on and around the water, going fishing and doing stand-up paddling.

The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) in Rostock is one of the leading demographic research centers in the world. It's part of the Max Planck Society, the internationally renowned German research society.
