Junior Professorship of Trifon Missov extended for another 3 years

Three years ago, mathematician Trifon Missov was appointed junior professor by the University of Rostock and the MPIDR. Having been successfully evaluated, the professorship has now been extended for another three years.

Trifon Missov’s work focuses on methodological questions arising from demographic and biodemographic research. He researches into the so called “mortality plateaus”, observed for example when analyzing the mortality of the oldest old. The “plateau“ occurs because the increase in mortality with age decelerates at older ages. Mathematically speaking, mortality increases until it reaches a threshold value, the corresponding curve resembling a plateau.

Other research foci are the characterization and statistical approximation of so called “mixture mortality models” and the modeling of optimal life-course strategies for non-human species.

Trifon Missov, aged 33, stems from Bulgaria. He studied applied mathematics in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia and in St Petersburg (Russia). After his PhD, which he completed at the University of St Petersburg, and research stays at the MPIDR, he was appointed junior professor at the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences at the University of Rostock. At the MPIDR, he is working in the Laboratory  Survival and Longevity.
