Public Lectures on Well-Being and Happiness

Within the framework of the international PhD program Demo-Doc, three renowned scientists will hold lectures on October 22 and 23 on well-being and happiness. The lectures are open to the public.

Together with 17 Demo-Doc doctoral students, the international PhD program Demo-Doc is starting its second autumn term. From October 16 to 26, Demo Doc participants will be staying as guests at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock. Part of the program is open to the public. Three lectures by renowned scientists will focus on well-being and happiness. On Monday, 22 of October, MPIDR Director Prof. Joshua Goldstein will talk on fertility and the great recession (10 am to 11.15 am), to be followed by a lecture by Prof. Hilke Brockmann (Jacobs University Bremen) on happiness and wellbeing (1.30 pm to 3 pm). "Successful Aging" is Tuesday's lecture theme (October, 23, 10 am - 11.15 am) and it will be held by Prof. Karsten Hank, University of Cologne.

The Demo-Doc students come from eight countries. They are enrolled as PhD students at one of the five partner universities participating in the program and their dissertations deal with demographic issues. Aside from listening to the lectures, the PhD students are given the opportunity for detailed discussions with the scientists. The students will also introduce their own research work, providing the opportunity for discussions.

The multinational program was birthed  last year by the Universities of Rostock, Barcelona, Lund and Rome, and by the MPIDR. It is sponsored by the German funding organization German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst). Demo-Doc includes the supervision of participating doctoral students at their home universities, a transnational mentoring program, research stays at one of the partner universities, and it has an annual Autumn School held in Rostock.
