Start of the European Doctoral School of Demography

The European Doctoral School of Demography (EDSD) at the MPIDR has been hosting 18 Ph.D students from all over Europe since September 5,  2011.

The students have different scientific backgrounds, such as mathematics, politics or economics. During the School's preparatory course lasting 6 weeks, the participants will acquire the basic skills needed for their demographic research. The students will then move to Barcelona, where the EDSD core courses will be held until end of July 2012.

“The EDSD is unique in Europe,” says Heiner Maier, coordinator of the EDSD preparatory courses, as students and  course instructors alike come from a wide range of countries in Europe and beyond, and course location rotates between the participating institutions, based in different European cities. “The skills taught at the School enable the Ph.D students to address a wide range of research questions when doing their research and will help them in their future research career,”  says Maier.

Applications for the EDSD 2012-13 program will be received from February 2012 onwards.
