Prof. James Vaupel elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences

Prof. James W. Vaupel of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research Rostock has been elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) as a regular scientific member. The NAS recognizes with that honor distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.

James Vaupel says: "The election to the National Academy of Sciences is a special honor and one I dreamed of receiving some day. So I was particularly happy - and taken by surprise - when I received word of my election." The Director of the MPIDR states further: "I was elected, in good part, because of the research I have done over the past seven years at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, research that many of the research scientists and doctoral students at the Institute helped with or contributed to in various direct and indirect ways. This is an honor not just for me but for all of us at the Institute."

The election was held on April 22, 2004, during the business session of the 141st annual meeting of the Academy. Election to membership in the Academy is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a U.S. scientist or engineer.
