Evaluating Immigrants’ Cultural Assimilation by Using Digital Trace Data
Jisu Kim, André Grow-Böser, Asli Ebru Sanlitürk, Emilio Zagheni; in Collaboration with René Flores D. (University of Chicago, USA), Kiran Garimella (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, USA), Ingmar Weber (Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany), Ilana Ventura (University of Chicago, USA)
The cultural assimilation of immigrants is poorly understood, partially because suitable data and indicators are lacking. This project sheds new light on patterns of cultural assimilation, using digital traces and an intergenerational survey with respondents selectively recruited via Facebook advertisements. Detailed Description
Assessing cultural integration from social media data
Relation between origin and destination attachment indexes for all the migrants in the data, projected on four integration types. Here, we observe various different patterns for individual users, leading to different assimilation types. The red lines provide an approximate indication of users’ assimilation type. The angle of each individual from the x/y-axis, together with the distance from the origin, gives us an indication of the assimilation type. For instance, a migrant close to the x-axis is most probably going through an assimilation process, a migrant close to the y-axis is undergoing separation, while those in between are undergoing integration or globalisation. © Kim Jisu, et al.
