Workshop of the EAPS Working Group “The Anthropological Demography of Europe”
TRANSANTIONALISM, FAMILY TIES, AND MIGRATION IN EUROPE
13-14 December 2007, Institut National d’Etude Démographiques, Paris

Organizers: Laura Bernardi and Clementine Rossier

Call for papers

Migration flows and the circulation of people within the European context increased dramatically in the last decades and is in the center of scientific and political interest. Anthropological demography approach to migration has the potential to constitute a bridge between migration research in demography and research on transnationalism in anthropology. The former emphasizes economic and social factors as causes of migration and sharply distinguishes between receiving and sending communities. The latter reflects a move away from bounded units of analysis and localized community studies towards an interest in the complex articulation of sending and receiving areas and in the migration experience of individuals as part of nuclear and extended families

This workshop aims at understanding differences and similarities in migration processes in Europe from the point of view of the individual experience, that of the family organization, and that of the communities involved. Special attention is given to anthropological demographic research focusing on motivational, political, and legal dimensions of migration and on the interrelationship between migration and other demographic processes. Theoretical, empirical and methodological papers are equally welcome and should address one of the following topics:

  1. Circulation of people: permanent, return, recurrent, and conflict migration
  2. The role of individual, family, community, and institutions on migration
  3. Transnational families and transnational networks
  4. The gender dimension of migration
  5. Migration and strong family ties
  6. Migration and reproduction
  7. Methodological challenges of doing transnational research

Submissions of extended abstract, papers or posters are invited. Those who wish to participate should submit directly but not after than June 30, 2007, to Françoise Schmitt (schmitt@ined.fr : a) an abstract of at least 500 words; b) an indication of the institutional affiliation and position of the author/s; c) the contact information of the corresponding author: telephone number, fax number, email address, postal address.
