Economic Well-Being and Life-Course Transitions (Dissertation)

Julian Schmied, Mikko Myrskylä, Christian Dudel; in Zusammenarbeit mit Timm Bönke (Free University of Berlin, Deutschland)

Ausführliche Beschreibung

Individuals experience numerous major transitions throughout the life course, such as partnering, becoming parents, or retiring. These transitions go along with significant changes in individual needs, well-being, and consumption. It is, however, difficult to exactly quantify the effect of these changes. This project tackles the methodological challenges involved in estimating the effect of life-course transitions on economic well-being, and it investigates income, consumption, and subjective measures of well-being before and after transitions. We also take into account long-running cohort trends and other aspects of well-being such as health. To achieve the aims of this project, we use rich survey as well as extensive administrative register data. The results of this project provide useful benchmarks for social policy and for individual decisions, such as pension saving.
