Fertility and Uncertainty

The global recession, the COVID-19 pandemic, and rising economic insecurity have led to increased research interest in the question of how uncertainty in childbearing environments is linked to fertility outcomes. Projects in this research area examine how large-scale shocks and structural insecurity shape fertility and partnership behavior across contexts. One focal point is the short- and medium-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on family formation processes. Another focal point is the role of economic uncertainty, including labor market instability and precarious partnership conditions, in shaping fertility and union dynamics in high-income countries.
