Siblings are born less often in couples where at least one parent has a low level of education than in couples where both partners have completed tertiary education. This is the result of a study by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research. The study is based on a data analysis of 22 European countries. more

The pandemic killed millions of people worldwide. The number of bereaved is even higher. Young people more often lost grandparents, and older people were more likely to mourn the loss of siblings. These are the results of a simulation-based study published in PNAS by an international team including MPIDR Researchers and a visiting student from the University of California, Berkeley. more

In their recent study MPIDR Researcher Daniela Perrotta and co-authors show how a novel LinkedIn dataset can be used to characterize international migration aspirations in Europe. They find that in absolute terms, countries in Northern and Western Europe are the most attractive ones for potential migrants. But in terms of relative attractiveness - quantified by means of a gravity-type model - Southern Europe appears to be more attractive. more

Last summer, MPIDR Researcher Xinyi Zhao and colleagues published a study analyzing migration flows of scientists moving to and from Germany, using bibliometric data from over eight million scholarly publications from the online publication database Scopus. Their most recent paper, a follow-up study, appeared in the journal Scientometrics and shows that male researchers who had left Germany return to Germany at a higher rate than female researchers of the same academic cohorts and disciplines. more

MPIDR Researchers Peter Eibich and Angelo Lorenti and a colleague studied the causal effect of retirement on voluntary work in Europe and the U.S. They found an increase in volunteering rates in all countries analyzed. Their paper was recently published in the journal Labour Economics. more

Depression is a major cause of work disability worldwide. According to current research, the baby boomer generation is particularly affected compared to older generations. To find the reasons, doctoral student Maria Gültzow is investigating how differences in lifestyle between generations influence the risk of developing depression. She presents her results at the "Rostock's Eleven" research competition on June 2. more
