The stillbirth rate in Germany has been rising steadily since 2009. The reasons for this are still unclear. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) and the University of Rostock have used decomposition analysis to investigate the influence of demographic factors such as the age and nationality of pregnant women on the increase in the stillbirth rate in Germany. more

The 2023 Young Scholar Award of the journal Advances in Life Course Research goes to Bettina Hünteler. Since April 2023, she is working in the Kinship Inequalities Research Group at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock. more

June 28, 2023 | New faces at MPIDR
Another new face at MPIDR is Alessandro Feraldi from Italy. Alessandro comes from Sapienza University in Rome where he obtained his PhD. The topic of his thesis was “Gender Gap in Health and Survival". His field of research is demography and he has a background in statistics. In his previous research, Alessandro analyzed the gender gap in health and survival, focusing on the contributions of age and causes of death to the gender gap in life expectancy, as well as on social and behavioral risk factors that potentially increase/decrease the gender gap in healthy life expectancy. Alessandro joins the research group Labor Demography as a postdoctoral fellow. more

MPIDR welcomed several new faces to the Institute in May. One of them is José Carlos Andrade Santacruz from Ecuador. While working with us for the next three years as a PhD student, he will focus on methodological innovations to life tables to study inequalities in mortality across different socioeconomic contexts. more

On June 7th, Jiaxin Shi successfully defended his dissertation on “Mortality Inequality and Its Implications for Retirees” and obtained his DPhil from the University of Oxford. more

Disasters affect whether, when, and how many children people have – a critical dimension of human behavior that is among the most intimate decisions people make in their lives. A current Systematic Literature Review examines how fertility changes after such drastic events. What is special about this review is that the researchers have tried to reduce risk of various biases during literature review. more
