MPIDR at the Population Association of America Annual Meeting 2023

Several researchers of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) present their work at the Annual Meeting of the Population Association of America, which takes place from April 12-15, 2023. The Institute also has an on-site exhibition booth #207.

The Population Association of America (PAA) is a non-profit, scientific, professional organization promoting research on population issues. The Association has nearly 3,000 members, including demographers, sociologists, economists, and public health professionals.

The Annual Meeting of the Association is one of the most important meetings for population researchers and has more than 2,000 people participating each year.

Data and Modeling Approaches to Assessing Climate-conflict Impact on Population Dynamics (Member Initiated Meetings)

Room: Strand 9

Description: Conveners: Raya Muttarak, Professor of Demography, Department of Statistical Sciences, University of Bologna, Italy Kathryn Grace, Associate Director, Minnesota Population Center & Associate Professor, Geography, Environment and Society, University of Minnesota, USA Roman Hoffman, Research Group Leader "Social Cohesion, Health and Wellbeing", International Institute for Applied System Analysis, Austria Liliana Adriano, Lecturer in Global Health, University of Southampton, UK Risto Conte Keivabu, Postdoc Laboratory of Digital and Computational Demography, Max Planck Institute of Demographic Research, Rostock, Germany Francesca Zanasi, Postdoc POPCLIMA, Department of Statistical Sciences, University of Bologna, Italy Description: The ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Afghanistan, to name a few, coupled with small- and large-scale climate change impacts (e.g., seasonal variability, extreme events, and long-term changing conditions) have the potential to strongly affect human health, well-being, livelihoods, and social systems. Climate change impacts include extreme events with a large spatial footprint like hurricanes and floods, but they also include more local experiences like poorer growing season conditions, waterborne disease outbreaks or more frequent heat waves during the warm season. The effects of these events can be exacerbated when climate change impacts and conflict come together. As part of the activities of the IUSSP Scientific Panel on Population dynamics under global conflict and climate change, the workshop aims at providing researchers with theoretical and analytical tools to address how conflict and climate change affect a wide range of demographic outcomes, such as health, fertility, mortality, and migration. The one-day workshop comprises four parts that reconcile theoretical approaches and hands-on activities. First, we provide an introduction to and overview of demographic research on conflict, climate change, and population dynamics. Second, an overview of the demographic, climate, and conflict data sources available for research in this field, coupled with a practical session on linking spatial conflict and climate data (e.g. ACLED and ERA5 respectively) with georeferenced micro-level data (e.g. Demographic and Health Surveys) using the software R. Third, the afternoon session will be devoted to critically approach conflict and climate change measurement, with reasoning on operationalization and causal inference. Finally, the workshop will conclude with a practical session on statistical modeling with the software R.

1:00 PM - 4:30 PM

IUSSP Workshop: "Demographic Microsimulations in R Using SOCSIM: Modelling Population and Kinship Dynamics" (Member Initiated Meetings)

Room: Strand 8

Description: The SOCSIM demographic microsimulator, developed at the University of California, Berkeley, has supported studies in social sciences and demography for decades. The simulator uses stochastic models to produce synthetic populations with genealogical structures based on historical demographic rates. Research using SOCSIM continues to be published in the highest-ranked demographic journals, especially in studies of kinship dynamics (e.g., family structure, kin availability and loss, generational overlap, etc.). This workshop will introduce a new chapter in the history of SOCSIM: a portable and platform-independent release of the simulator that runs in the R language for statistical programming. We will cover the basics of SOCSIM, review recent work using SOCSIM by leading scholars, and help participants get started with the R package ‘RSOCSIM.’

1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

IUSSP Workshop: "Scholarly Migration Worldwide: Inauguration of the Scholarly Migration Database" (Member Initiated Meetings)

Room: Strand 13 A

Description: This meeting is dedicated to the launch of the first global database of scholarly migration which is beneficial to all PAA attendees and especially those interested in migration research. The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research curated and hosts this database. The meeting will consist of two keynotes, one panel discussion, one brief hands-on session on how to download and use the database and a short reception to celebrate the launch of the database.

1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Workshop - Introduction to Social Media and Big Data for Migration Studies

Room: Bolden 1

Description: The workshop aims to introduce two types of big data, i.e., Google Trends and Twitter data. This workshop will be the great opportunity for the researchers in the study of migration but also demography in general to get familiar with two popular sources of data. We plan to begin the session by introducing the data format, related literature, empirical findings, advantages and critical challenges of such data. We then plan to have more interactive sessions on how to retrieve these data and write and search inquiries.
